To a certain degree Tommy Hilfiger’s fall / winter 2013 collection felt pleasantly familiar, close to home, further exploring the brand’s classic interpretation of the preppy school girl aesthetic – although some of the general tendencies did suffer mild transformations and in those same shifts lied the element of novelty this season. Not new to the New York fashion week (NYFW) scene, the masculine turned feminine trend appeared as reaching forth the perfectly fitting and fairly conservative British tailoring during Hilfiger’s presentation and the results were as expected, exquisite.
Various subtle reworks of the glen plaids and houndstooth checks served as foundation for the clean and minimal silhouettes that shaped the first half of the collection. From fabulous double-breasted coats, to short-suits and button-down shirts, everything was touched by the playfulness of the traditional patterns. The other half, still carrying some of the understated British essence felt more modern, slightly youthful and somewhat edgier. It was the black cable knit embossed leather dress that pointed straight to the future, with no intention of looking back.f
