While its customary for a runway review to start at the begginning, I’m going to first describe the end of We Are Handsome’s Australian fashion week (MBFWA) show. As the runway drew to a close the packed theatre broke out into a miniature storm of thunderous applause, punctuated by whoops and cheers from the crowd. For anyone not familiar with the label that fact says everything you need to know about their cult status and following, for a brand that tattooed digital prints onto both swimwear and minds in just a few short years of existence.
Granted, We Are Handsome’s aesthetic isn’t for everyone. But their spring 2013 collection did do a good job of expanding the appeal. Prints of ghetto blasters or palm trees against tequila sunrise skies were L.A glamour all over, and to be expected; while vintage rose prints on high-waisted cuts offered up a more delicate serving of swimwear trend appeal.
On top of the digital printed bikinis and one-piece swimsuits, We Are Handsome added a floating maxidress printed with a New York cityscape, printed lycra leggins and figure-hugging dresses, and a few showstoppers for good measure. The latter took shape in a full skin-tight jumpsuit in bold multitone prints with sheer mesh panels, and a diamond print dress embellished with sparkling nebulas of gems. These two pieces will be more editorial favourites than pieces that fly off shelves, but they kept things interesting visually. And aren’t those out-there pieces what this MBFWA has been missing?
