Y Project by Yohan Serfaty: the sleepers awake

You never quite know what you’ll get at Paris fashion week: displays of fashion-as-art have a habit of presenting themselves in unexpected places.

Walking into Y Project’s spring / summer 2013 presentation meant you suddenly found yourself in the middle of a makeshift infirmary. Models were tasked with lying completely still (some, I could have sworn, had genuinely fallen asleep) as if in deep comas. A bell rang and one by one the sleepers awoke, wandering to the runway drowsily.

Y Project’s pieces made a unified whole with the dreamy and slightly haunting setting. Audio soundscapes that echoed around the room made the whole thing feel a little like you were observing some strange experiment. White and cream tones in leather and linen mirrored the dreamscape of the scene. Elongated sleeves, textured knitwear, and armor like metal accessories will keep those with a penchant for the edgy-yet-luxe in a daydream state of their own.
