If you thought the fashion world had run out of ways to invent new cuts, think again: Zimmermann presented their spring / summer 2014 collection in New York today, and managed to reinvent several wardrobe staples in the process.
There were the backless cuts with asymmetrical details. There were dresses with plunging necklines, metallic fabrics and honeycomb mesh panels. And then there were those swimsuits: cut to reveal and to hide and to wow, half cupless, full sex appeal.
But if the audience nonetheless descended into a hazy nostalgia of childhood trips to the circus, it wasn’t by accident. The collection’s title was ‘The Ringmaster’. Flouncing frills on trapeze shaped dresses, soft pastels and ruffled necklines drew a nebulous and none-too-literal association to big top magic: circus dreams without too much clowning around.
Zimmermann’s signature florals worked their way into the mix of shimmering metallics and abstract prints – vintage but youthful, like a cool girl who whips a jumpsuit together using nothing but a keen eye her grandma’s curtains.
There aren’t many brands representing Australia on the New York Fashion Week schedule, but the country needn’t worry; Zimmermann don’t just pick up the slack, they wholly obliterate it.
