AM Eyewear is an interesting study in contrast. Sure, the Australian label creates some of the more aggressively modern sunglasses and frames you can find on the market today, but the production? Well, that’s remarkably old school. The company’s director, Simon Ponnusamy, designs each frame by hand (using pencil and paper instead of a computer), and master craftsmen cut every pair from a solid piece of acetate before sending them to be polished and packed by hand. It’s a painstaking process — one that can last up to 14 hours, and that’s after the master copy is created — but the finished product is all the better for it. Bonus: Once you start wearing them, the Italian acetate frames will gradually mold to fit your face. Considering how often you’ll be busting them out, that shouldn’t take long at all.
