Diesel may have been founded over three decades ago, but if you had to identify a catalyst for the high-end denim craze, you wouldn’t be wrong pinning it on the brand in the early ’90s. Though Renzo Rosso and denim wizard Adriano Goldschmied first introduced the brand in 1978, it didn’t take off in America until after Wilbert Das, just out of design school in his native Netherlands, became creative director in 1991. In the course of two decades (he left in 2009), Das grew the brand by meticulously deconstructing denim—he moved the label to the coin pocket—as well as knits, basics, and tailored pieces, and Diesel expanded into an international streetwear juggernaut.
