Edwin Jeans

Like many great things, Edwin was born out of necessity. In 1947, Japan didn’t produce jeans locally, but K.K. Tsunemi loved denim. So he started an import business selling U.S.-made jeans to the Japanese market. Domestically produced denim became available in 1951, but the inferiority of the product compared to its American counterparts meant that Tsunemi would wait another decade before launching his own denim line in 1961. Dubbed Edwin — a play on the word "denim" with the "M" inverted to become a "W" — the brand came out of the gate strong, crafting the world’s heaviest jeans from their now-famous 16 oz. rainbow selvage denim, and revolutionizing the industry with pre-washed jeans in the '70s (until then, raw denim was the norm). They continued to innovate in the '80s with the introduction of stone washing, and now, under the direction of K.K. Tsunemi’s son, Edwin crafts some of the sturdiest, best-looking jeans on the market.
