Like most successful American designers of the early aughts, NYC-based John Varvatos studied at Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein before launching his eponymous line in 2000. The Detroit native’s tailored clothing — amped up with serious rock ’n’ roll reverb — has nabbed him three CFDA awards and the accolades of a who’s who of music greats: Slash, Alice Cooper, and Robert Plant, to name a few. Varvatos works with lots of black, lots of leather, lots of layers, and typically festoons it all with sheen, glittery, or rough edges. And though most rockers want to live in a second skin, his fit embraces the trim comfort embraced by his mentors.
