As a salesman for the Munsingwear undergarment factory in Minneapolis, Abbot Pederson bought a stuffed penguin, which he named Pete, during a 1955 business trip to Manhattan. On the flight back to the Twin Cities (the story goes), he lopped off the bird’s head; a flight attendant reattached it with a necktie and suggested he put the cravat-cinched image of Pete on a pop-collar shirt. Munsingwear soon launched its first Original Penguin golf shirt, now known as the “55,” which gained fame on the backs of Frank Sinatra and his fellow Rat Packers. The brand fell off the radar for a couple decades, but a hipster clamoring for vintage Penguin gear led Munsingwear to relaunch a full retro sportswear line in 2003, full of slender cuts for the modern guy. By keeping it decidedly vintage, the collection has garnered a new cast of loyalist tastemakers who have helped establish Original Penguin’s more extensive portfolio of apparel and accessories.

Armed with sharp design skills and cutting-edge vision, Olivier Theyskens teamed up with Theory to create Theyskens’ Theory — and they’ve been building a cult following ever since. The ultra-modern dresses, slouchy knits, white-hot blazers, and silky button-downs here each carry the unmistakable Theyskens touch, which takes clean, cool silhouettes and roughs them up with abstract digital prints, asymmetrical cuts, and seductive, sheer panels.
