Steven Alan

When Steven Alan opened his Wooster Street store in 1994, the native New Yorker was in the business of curating, not creating — Alan stocked his retail shop with the wares of like-minded, emerging downtown designers. So it was no surprise then that when his concept took off, so did his own ambitions. In 1999 Alan launched his first collection, the key piece of which was the reverse-seam shirt with its twisted placket and French side seams. Alan built that initial collection into a universe of menswear — slim suits, understated plaid shirts, lived-in chinos — that is simultaneously precisely tailored and perfectly unstudied. He now has locations around New York, L.A., and San Francisco, and has collaborated with brands from Nike to Dockers to online eyewear purveyor Warby Parker, establishing himself as the go-to partner when a classic piece needs tweaking.
