The Launch of the 18th Melbourne Fashion week

Melbourne is best know for it’s sporadic showers, hidden laneways and the amazing cafe culture. So it’ll come as no surprise that I write about the launch of Melbourne spring fashion week (MSFW), whilst drinking a coffee and hiding from the rain in a little cafe. This year marks not only the event’s 18th birthday, described as its coming of age by Melbourne’s mayor Robert…

Accessorising Deco with Anna Dello Russo

An Art Deco inspired dress may have a vintage feel to it, but it’s not difficult to modernise the look away from the ’40s. At Gucci’s Milan fashion week show, Anna Dello Russo paired one of the house’s Deco-esque dresses with these: gold and python stilettos, the modern woman’s accessory for a decadent flapper look.

Sapto Djojokartiko: shining from the dark side

Sapto Djojokartiko’s latest collection may shimmer with sequins and metallic embellishments, but the look book is firmly planted in the dark side. Against a woody backdrop the intricate craftsmanship of his gowns takes on the same qualities as the creeping branches and tangled vines of an enchanted forest. Djojokartiko’s Indonesian heritage shows through occasionally – and subtly – in references to traditional shapes.

Melbourne restaurant scene: Spoonbill

Part of the Art Series Hotels, Spoonbill at The Olsen is both modern and classic. This chic restaurant features works from acclaimed artist John Olsen, not to mention his famous (and certifiably delicious) recipe for paella. Like the hotel itself, Spoonbill delivers a great combination which highlights the best of Melbourne – art and food, and fashion. Read the full review after the break.

Stylish oblivion

Weronika Kosinska‘s protagonist may be curling her hair and getting dressed into pristinely elegant and feminine gowns; but she has something on her mind. Her pensive expressions, her blank stares, suggests that state of mind where you’re going about your daily business but your thoughts are bound up by the impenetrable ropes of some obsession, some singular though that occupies the whole mind. As the…

Barbara Bui looks to the icons of the 70s

As I somewhat unkindly posed to a designer during this current a href=”http://www.fashionising.com/fashionweek/paris-fashion-week”>Paris fashion week, fall 2012 may prove unkind to the fashion industry’s big names if women reject the androgynous and voluminous aesthetics being offered up on runways en masse. Making themselves look bigger is seldom high on the list of things anyone wants to achieve through their clothing, and as a result many…
