Antonio Marras Spring / Summer 2014

Antonio Marras’ catwalks always take place in a hell of a setting. They are catwalks staged amongst the magic of impossible settings. For summer 2014‘s catwalk, the underground setting took in mirror and stain-glass lined walls and doorways outside which a temporary forest hosted violin playing fauns. Read this and think not of the likes of Alice in Wonderland – Marras’ summer 2014 collection drew…

If Alice wore couture: locked away in wonderland

Fairytale fashion captures the imagination of the youthful and infuses it with the creativity of the sophisticated. The wonderings of a literary masterpiece comes to life in this imaginary fashion shoot by Carlos Ramos. Coven’s see-through sexiness downplayed

Coven have downplayed the (literal) sheer sexiness of their spring 2014 dresses in the collection’s ad campaign – mostly by pairing them with tassled mid-heeled loafers and an unromantic white backdrop. And yet the beauty of the pieces is abundantly clear: here are sheer skirts that work just as well with their body-hugging matching cropped bodices as with whimsical bug-printed tees (the latter ensemble has…

How to: Aquilano Rimondi’s Wonderland eyeshadow

Despite being associated with the ocean, blue is not limited to being a summer color. The blue eyeshadow trend is one of the biggest for spring / summer and it made such an impact that we’ll be seeing more of it this fall / winter. A unique take on the trend was this one we spotted at the Aquilano Rimondi fall 2013 show. Always creative,…

The Passion of Thom Browne

If you have heard of Thom Browne, chances are you know more about his eccentric menswear line and less about the otherworldly qualities he brought to the womenswear scene ever so graciously. Not one to trade incitement for ethics and solemnity, it’s no wonder Browne gained the title of America’s most provocative designer. Photographer An Le managed to capture the man behind the name, behind…

A raven-haired beauty wearing Raven

Clothing label Raven are purveyors of all things dark and alternative, but then with gothic styling making a revival into high fashion, dark and alternative are two qualities in strong demand. To shoot pieces from Raven’s autumn 2013 collection, Peter Coulson was certifiably the man for the job, pairing up with model Rebecca again and turning her into something of a raven-haired Alice in a…

Aquilano Rimondi: Alice re-interpreted for Fall

A literal interpretation of “Alice in Wonderland” lead to quite the magical and sumptuous fall / winter 2013 collection coming from Tommaso Aquilano and Roberto Rimondi. Exploring a full spectrum of heart patterns and playing card motifs to accent the 1940s hourglass shapes and menswear inspired jackets, the designer duo was apparently seeking “the ironic aspect of the fairy tale”.

Imagining wonderland

Imagination is a fast disappearing commodity. If you can get to adulthood and still have one fifth of the imagination you had as a child, then you have something worth more than gold, something that can still bring you happiness and entertainment even when all the cats on the internet have gone away. As well as being literary classics, C.S Lewis’ Alice adventures are a…

Drawn into Wonderland: Beliv

There’s magic where illustration and real life collide: you can only imagine some God-like hand overshadowing the page with a giant pencil, the master’s tool with which creation begins. Only, when the cartoonist interacts with the real world, it’s the kind of magic that existed in Who Framed Roger Rabit. The architect of this hybrid world can do things we can’t. They can mess with…

For Queen and country: Daphne Groeneveld

If the styling of this shoot starring Daphne Groeneveld seems a little eclectic – fantastical, even – then you need to view it in conjunction with both the shoot’s title at the issue’s theme. Curtsy while you’re thinking, it saves time paraphrases advice the Red Queen gives to Alice amidst other helpful nonsense dispensed in the Garden of Live Flowers. The issue of i-D is…
