Why the Great Gatsby trailer mixes flapper fashion with Jay-Z

As the camera pans over 1920s New York in the opening of the newly released Great Gatsby trailer, you might expect a soundtrack of brassy, hip-shimmying jazz. But this is Baz Luhrmann, the man who had Shakespeare’s brave Mercutio dressed in drag and belting out Young Hearts Run Free. The man who gave Paris circa 1900 a soudtrack of Smells Like Teen Spirit and Like…

Shimmy and shine

While an early preview of Baz Lurhmann’s The Great Gatsby costuming suggests Carey Mulligan’s outfits will be closely on-trend for the day, the modern interpretations of 20s flapper fashion are far more understated. First official Gatsby images

It’s still early days for Baz Luhrmann’s film adaptation of The Great Gatsby – that classic, Jazz Age, ultimately tragic piece of literary fiction loved by many. Yet with the release of some official photos from the set we get a taster of the fashions to come from the film. In these released shots Carey Mulligan is the quintessential icon of 1920s fashion: bobbed hair,…

When it comes to 2012’s hair, actress Carey Mulligan is one of the ones to watch. Her role in The Great Gatsby, and the influence bound to come with it, ensures that much. Magazine covers dominated by a hairstyle certainly won’t hurt either.

Keira Knightley swathed in Chanel pearls

Perhaps I was a little harsh on Keira Knightley’s bob: the straight styling she debuted it with simply didn’t do the hairstyle justice. But while the long bob still trumps it on the list of upcoming 2011 hair trends, the shorter bob does yet have quite a bit of a range. Some soft waves do the cut wonders (and can be achieved very simply using…

Photographed by Peter Lindbergh and styled by Grace Coddington, Carey Mulligan makes running around the countryside in couture gowns and bare feet look like an effortlessly stylish affair.
