Disco glam on roller skates

Flipped hair, glitter eyes, glossy lips of crimson red and a whole lot of gold serve to outline her flirty character. Made perfect with gilded roller skates and flashy, metallic shorts, Sydney Mays takes you right back to the disco-fabulous days saturated with loud music, colourful lighting and dazzling garments. Half roller babe, half disco queen, she turns the ’70s flashback into a dreamland, as photographed…

Where the pool meets the ocean

We fell in love with sports luxe many moons ago, yet somehow we haven’t stopped tumbling. The love affair continues into spring / summer 2014: a season where bright neon accents are the exclamation marks on statements made from slick minimal whites, airy mesh fabrics, and reassuringly sturdy neoprenes. All those things get a distinctly Sydney spin in the latest shoot by Kelly Defina for…

A day off in another decade

Somehow the elements of fashion’s neo-punk and the streets of Sydney just gel well together. A relaxed, too-cool-to-care vibe permeates both: the unlaced Doc Martens and clashes of prints in Blake Sutherland styling, and the arcades and streets chosen by photographer Aimee Stoddart make for an editorial that could be the 1990s or could be the now.

Fetishised sensuality gone rogue (NSFW)

It’s not about the desire to shock anymore, not since the bondage element has long morphed into a full statement of luxury, instead the modern fetishism is more about allowing sensuality to break new grounds, without fully abandoning the taste of forbiddance. Chokers, fishnets, thigh-high stockings and leather harnesses met Sidney Bristow’s androgynous beauty as photographed by Yves Kortum for Bambi Magazine, in a successful…

Dressing the uptown girl

It’s not Park Avenue. To my eye, I’d guess at one of Sydney’s winding city streets. But Forever New’s Park Avenue Collection, and the campaign to promote it, is probably not going for something so literal anyway. It’s going for a mood, a look, one of gently waved hair and feminine dresses, lace and florals and brocade. Juliana Forge plays the uptown girl who’s never…

Hair how to: clean & chic side part at Witchery

Straddling the space between timeless classics and modern sporty-chic is the spring 2013 collection from Australian retailer Witchery. The key story of the season is a monochromatic one: crisp white and pitch black facing off in a multitude of minimalistic ways, complimented by occasional bursts of colour and slick snakeskin prints. The collection – titled “Bold Vision” – was shown on the runway in Sydney…

Vanishing Elephant comes home to Sydney

After a two year stint in Melbourne, designers Arran Russell, Felix Chan and Huw Bennett are bringing their label back home to Sydney. The new store located in Westfield Bondi junction will carry offerings from both the men’s and women’s collections. The space was designed by Kevin Ho and brings across the brand’s clean cut aesthetic to the newly created space.

Ancient worship: Camilla’s Pachamama campaign

By letting her imagination run wild and by refusing to be impelled purely by a sequence of typical fashion trends, Australian designer Camilla Franks chose to channel her personal journey as she reconnected with Mother Nature, as main inspiration for her spring 2013 collection. Named after the Pachamama goddess, worshiped by the indigenous tribes of the Andes, the line-up overflows with worldly cultural influences.

Sheena Trivedi S/S ’13 look book

Many of us use our heritage as a defining factor of self, a way to identify with what we are and what we are not. For Sheena Trivedi, that identification enters into her designs, amalgams of her New York self with the cultural influence of her Indian-born mother. Trivedi’s spring 2013 look book displays the blend perfectly: each shot has a different backdrop – Central…
