Why the Great Gatsby trailer mixes flapper fashion with Jay-Z

As the camera pans over 1920s New York in the opening of the newly released Great Gatsby trailer, you might expect a soundtrack of brassy, hip-shimmying jazz. But this is Baz Luhrmann, the man who had Shakespeare’s brave Mercutio dressed in drag and belting out Young Hearts Run Free. The man who gave Paris circa 1900 a soudtrack of Smells Like Teen Spirit and Like…

Marchesa: evening bags that wow

Whilst left brain practicality may tell you that a bag for the evening can be one that also works during the day, the creative right brain may disagree. Something compact, dainty, embellished and a true statement may be what your outfit is singing out for, especially if it’s comparatively understated. Just as their gowns are never less than beautifully ornate, Marchesa’s collection of handbags are…

Bekah Jenkins goes beyond the sea

She’s the runaway star of the summer 2012 season; the little fashion icon that could. The mermaid has cemented her place amount the season’s trends with editorial after editorial dedicated to her honour. Bekah Jenkins channels the underwater beauty in the latest from Flare Canada’s May 2012 issue. This time the references are very literal: Elizabeth Cabral’s styling centers on a palette of oceanic blue…

The scuba chic evolved

Last spring any mention of scuba was to be taken fairly literally. The trend centred around clinging diving-suit cuts, neon panels, exposed zips and neoprene-gone-luxe. But 2012 is the year of swirling influences of trends, and now it doesn’t matter if it’s Prada’s 50s inspired bodysuits or a floral Cavalli jacket; the neoprene plays second fiddle. It’s all about femininty infused with a sporty sensibility, and…

The way mermaid’s dream

Leyla Ugarte's Ocean Dreams is a double tribute. On the one hand it's a tribute to a trend of the season: fashion's infatuation with the underwater world of mythical mermaids and oceanic life. That much is clear from Ugarte's styling and photography, the former taking in everything from billowy kaftans to jellfish-like prints, sparkles and sequins and nautical tailoring, while the latter, her photography, used clever backdrops and effects to emulate a vision of the briny deep. Her more personal tribute is meanwhile to Spanish designer Jesús del Pozo, who the world lost last year.

Making a splash

Mermaids are being plucked from the depths of mythology, from the pages of fairytales and legends, and transported to the present day. Across the world of fashion sequins, paillettes, pearls and metallics are being interpreted with an underwater theme, and our romance with the beauty of the sea creature has really only just begun. Photographer Patricia Imbarus offers up her interpretation of the season’s oceanic…

Out with a bang: Toni Maticevski

A bang or a wimper? Thats the question mark at the end of anything. The anticipation was that, with Maticevski as the closing show, VAMFF 2012 would go out with a bang. Look one seemed to confirm it in a heartbeat. Any expectation of frills and soft femininity were crushed under the sharp heel of a gilt-faced warrioress. “Skimpy” sounds like a dirty word, but…

Under the sea of Chanel

There was no need to guess which of the elements was inspiring Karl Lagerfeld for spring 2012: that much was evident in the giant coral and clam shell props that turned the Chanel stage into an underwater paradise. For the most part, though, this wasn’t one of the more detail-heavy collections of Karl’s. It was the influx of pure white and pastel pieces in clean…

Seaside holidays with Holly Fulton

Holiday was on Holly Fulton’s mind, and she didn’t shy away from dedicating her entire spring 2012 collection to what could have passed for a sweet session of daydreaming. So literal was the depiction that the coral-shaped embellishments and seashells were creeping up hemlines. The 60s-influence merged with Art Deco illustrations that also blended with animal prints, creating a strange squirm of variety in the…

Exclusive: rising from the deep

Projecting the many-coloured connotations of scuba diving onto the canvas of fashion doesn’t have to be limited to just the obvious neoprene. The wonder of that underwater world – of deep, clear blue ocean, vibrant reefs and curious fishes – can take shape in prints, textures, cuts, and colours. In this editorial styled by Rachel Harris, slick garments become a second skin – turning the…
