Cara Delevingne: angel of light

Most often when we see Cara Delevingne it’s in Burberry’s classic trench coats and London Look makeup; or perhaps some tomboy ensemble of leather biker pants and buckle boots. That’s both a strength, a natural fit for her British ‘it’ girl status, and an inevitable result of being a face of the Burberry brand. But while we always love seeing Cara in her attitude-laden, effortless…

A vision in white

Truth be told, not many can carry off an all-white ensemble. The balancing act of making it look classic chic and elegantly feminine is not easy. But here, Anna Dello Russo has not only nailed the look, she has also struck the 1930s chord with a modern aesthetic. I wish there was a front-on photo of this look, where her tucked-in shirt was more visible.…

Unconventional eye colour

I have, personally, a very strong attachment to liquid eyeliner. Specifically of the winged-out, cat eye kind. But using black liquid eyeliner as well as applying colourful eyeshadow doesn’t always work out for the best (for me anyway), particularly if you’re going for a contrastingly light coloured shadow and don’t have time to blend. Here’s an alternative from the pages of Vogue Nippon’s beauty supplement:…

Natasha Poly and The Realm of Sensuality

With its sumptuous, but never saturated, detail there’s a lot to this photo shoot that we could choose to focus on. We could start with the dresses, from the radiant quality of haute couture pieces to the fast disappearing summer that the prints continue to evoke. We could question why the staging feels so cropped as if we’re paying witness to a photo shoot which…

Snejana Onopka: gender blurring

Black, white, masculine, feminine: two sets of contrasts that form the styling foundation of Snejana Onopka’s shoot for Vogue Nippon’s July 2011 issue. And the key to recreating that androgynous balance is to pick the right elements: tailored wide leg pants, tuxedo jackets and men’s hats for the masculine elements; and lingerie-inspired fitted bodysuits, long back skirts, heels and feminine jewellery to juxtapose it.

Tough, not rough

Balenciaga’s flat cut-away boots could quite easily be dubbed the defining piece of footwear for 2011′s interpretation of punk. Hence why they proved the perfect opener for Vogue Nippon’s June 2011 When Punk Meets Funk shoot starring Anja Rubik, purposefully thrust atop a chair and into the frame. But further into the shoot we’re reminded that a pair of flat loafers can work just as…

Anja Rubik is one hot bride

Best of 2010: As we leave 2010 behind us, we take a glance back at some of the most popular, most inspiring and most talked-about content from Fashionising.com over the last 12 months. This article was first published on 28.01.2010. In theory, everything about this shoot should scream innocence and purity: the country backdrop of rolling hills and haystacks; the virginal white dresses and veils;…

Garishness or glamour

Swimsuits worn with luxurious furs, big hair and ultra-glamorous makeup. George Cortina‘s over the top and impractical beach-side styling hints at a tongue-in-cheek sense of garishness. But take the outfits off the not-so-pristine mediterranean township shore and onto a red carpet and they can be winners. This one, a dress from Pucci‘s FW10 collection, is the most perfect of all.

Happy magazine cover New Year

There really was never any question that the first cover of the new year would be from Vogue Nippon – their rapidity is unrivalled. Dubbing their first issue of the new decade as “Icons Forever” they’ve decided that top-earner Gisele Bundchen perfectly embodies the sentiment. Though with 2011 more then a month off and a monumental Fashionising.com Christmas still on the way we’ll beg off…

Bob with bangs / fringe hairstyle

Like all fashion trends, hair trends generally come, go, and eventually come back. Infrequently, though, there is the odd hairstyle that appears to have had its time, only to soon reappear, though thoroughly evolved. The bob and fringe (bangs) is one such hairstyle. Surging to popularity in 2008 before fading out at the tail end of 2009, I didn’t think that less than a year…
