The African Queen: Liam Fahy shoes

Up close you can see and feel the quality. One pair wraps the feet in an aura of jungle-queen exoticism, channeling the nostalgia of Katherine Hepburn’s The African Queen. Others take their African theme more literally with Congolese mask designs giving elegant women’s loafers a safari-esque twist.

London based shoe designer Liam Fahy brings a collection for spring / summer 2013 that manages to find balance in that elusive space between elegant simplicity and eye-catching detail. There’s always something, but never too much, with details like feather-soft pompoms and lace-up ribbons taking over where the hand printed Java-textiles leave off.

They say you can tell a lot about a person by their shoes. That being true, the Liam Fahy girl flies under the obvious-glamour radar, a lover of the immaculately crafted but one who knows her best kind of glamour is the understated kind.

Some people's wardrobes are about a small selection of pieces that all fit within one aesthetic - Tania Braukamper isn't such a person. With a wardrobe that spans three different rooms, her approach to fashion is a mixture of current-season key pieces mixed with vintage finds she's sourced on innumerous shopping trips around the world's more cultured capitals. Despite a disparate approach to shopping, Tania is adamant that the key to mixing vintage with new season is to stick to key looks and colours that work for oneself. And it's a theory that she works into her writing for Fashionising.com, where she serves as the publication's Editor.
