Ana Locking’s collections always have a philosophical foundation. Spring 2012 takes the title Under Beauty, an exploration of “the shadows that live under beauty [that] enable the light to shine more brightly.” The footwear component of Locking’s collection contrasts leather against traditional espadrille jute, with blocks of spring 2012 colours chosen to compliment the collection’s clothing – and the rest of your spring wardrobe. The…

Shoes are in many ways architectural. Shoes house your feet like an office building houses your work space, or a garage houses your mode of transport. But the best shoes are not only architectural in a functional sense, they’re so in an aesthetic one. They can house your feet like a lofty villa houses a warm summer getaway, or like a plush hotel hosts your…

These babies give the famous line don’t step on my blue suede shoes a whole new level of significance. It’s not just because their 14cm heel would make doing the twist a particularly towering feat, nor because their midnight blue suede makes the most stunning departure from black… But because, with the uncompromising attitude and tough independence these boots would give you, anyone treading on…

Whilst we were in Denmark talking to a number of brands about all things Scandinavian Design, we made a visit to the headquarters of ECCO shoes. There, we happened upon a magic number: the optimum heel height for comfortable yet stylish shoes.

Discounting the fact that I’d probably ruin these pretty quickly (a fact I’ll optimistically ignore), I can’t think of any reason why they shouldn’t be in my wardrobe. Rachel Comey’s entry, the Pegasus, is not as elaborate as the winged shoe offered by Alexander McQueen nor as subtle as Charlotte Olympia’s Mercury heels. Though it is the first winged clog we’ve seen to date.

A well made pair of shoes radiates quality. But when you marry quality construction with a statement style, that's when the heads will really turn. Even those most noncommittal on the idea of wedges would have trouble not giving these Lanvin shoes their full attention. Sometimes a black leather court shoe is the kind of wardrobe staple we really must have, but to stand out and make it count there are options beyond the stiletto or platform pump. Hence the appeal of a gold base that sits somewhere in between…

Looking at Rodarte’s metallic strappy shoes, with the twisted architecture of the solid heel, you might think there were some space-age inspirations. But the inspirations were otherwise: modern, yes, futuristic, no. The label’s spring 2012 collection was inspired by the artworks of Vincent Van Gogh – so gazing upon these shoes, as well as the deep shimmery blue pair which you can see after the…

“What chocolate can’t do, shoes can.” Whoever said that must be a very fit and financially-drained person. The autumn / winter collection of chunky heeled lace-up booties caters of every category of shoe lovers. Without being in-your-face open toed, there’s a small inch-wide opening…
