Whilst at university I chose to study the Fashion Styling pathway on my course. This pathway offered me the opportunity to specialise as a fashion stylist and image-maker in the creation of promotional images for the fashion industry. The key objective of this pathway was to provide a design education that encouraged me to explore personal ideas and concepts through fashion, culture and media, focusing on developing a professional awareness and a viable and realistic approach to the realisation of fashion and fashion-related images. I learnt to familiarise myself with the technical skills and I developed sufficient knowledge and confidence to cultivate and nurture a personal \'modus operandi\'.

Work Experience
Peep Show Clothing
Afflecks Palace
Manchester UK
This was my own business that I opened and ran myself for 2 years. A small womens fashion boutique in which I created a platform for young independent fashion labels to showcase and sell their collections to the public. I ran this shop on my own as a sole trader with one employee who worked 2 days a week for me. I was very successful on the Manchester fashion scene, where I regularly took part in fashion shows and networking events within the industry. I was in profit in my first year and was able to obtain a local grant to expand the business, for which I produced a detailed cash flow forecast and business plan.
During this time I also produced my own clothing label that I designed, manufactured and promoted. As well as selling the Peep Show label in my own store I sold my designs wholesale to several other stores in the UK including stockists in London. The Peep Show label is something I am very keen to re-launch at some stage in the future. I was able to sell the business for a profit when I decided to leave the UK to travel the world. Owning and running the boutique was an experience I found to be challenging but yet very rewarding.
Here are some of the regular tasks I took care of whilst running the business:
Sourcing new designers at networking events, university exhibitions and trade shows etc.
Working closely with designers to create collections and diffusion lines for the store
Buying and Ordering of all stock including wholesale and sale or return items
Merchandising existing stock
Trend prediction
Pricing goods using profit margins and market research
Styling of all promotional photo shoots
Promotional product design
Interior design and decoration of store and shop fittings
Web site design
Serving customers
Taking tailor made orders
Daily management of the shop
General book keeping and all tax returns
Dazed and Confused magazine
East End
London, UK
I worked for this London based fashion magazine as an assistant stylist for 3 months during my vacation from university. During this time I worked with head stylists and photographers at the magazine as well as working on freelance advertising projects. One of the photographers I was lucky to work with whilst I was at Dazed and Confused was Rankin Wardle, on a promotional shoot for Elle McPhersons lingerie line, Intimates.
Electric:Electric
London, UK
Electric:Electric is a small publication that reports of trends and underground street culture on the UK streets. I worked as a freelance writer and photographer that contributed to the Manchester section of the publication. This included sourcing and visiting innoative people and places, reporting on my findings, recording interviews, documenting with photographs then working my research into a finished article. The publication is distributed through out London City and nationwide companies.
Joyce Ridings
Denton
Manchester, UK
Joyce ridings is a small independent fashion label with in house production. I was involved in several areas of garment manufacture. My job was to check on garment finishing to high standard; interfacing, button holes, seams, also some pattern cutting and general organisation of despatch. The designer also designs and manufactures garments for other British labels including \'Jaeger\'.
Maxines
Melbourne
Australia
Maxines is a busy new and vintage retro clothes shop on Brunswick Street Melbourne. I worked here as a sales assistant for 3 months whilst travelling around Australia. My job included:
Serving customers
Visual merchandising of stock
Assisting customers
Pricing new stock
Stock control
General daily running of the shop
The Happy Hair Company
Whilst travelling around Australia I set up a freelance venture called the Happy Hair Company, Making and fixing dreadlocks, hair extensions and Braids. Although I have no formal qualifications in this field I have been practising self taught techniques for a number of years. Whilst I was in South East Asia I observed and picked up a new technique for dread locking using a fine crochet hook. This business was my sole source of income for 6 months whilst travelling Australia.
