Accentuated shoulders as a 2008 fashion trend

Remember those bulky shoulder pads from the 80s? They’re back! Well… ok not quite, I’m just trying to scare you. What is making it as as trend in 2008 is accentuated shoulders – but in a much more sculptured, structured way than those 1980′s power-suits.

2008 fashion trend - shoulders

2008′s shoulders are accentuated with short sleeves on streamlined cuts creating a more balanced silhouette. Pointed shoulders (like YSL and Fendi, above) add an element of futurism and fantasy to a dress or top, while Balenciaga’s rounded shoulders create a look that’s football player meets 16th century plate armor, only much daintier of course.

The emphasised shoulders work best when further balanced out by a cinched in waist. It’s not for everyone; but for those who dare, confidence is key.

Some people's wardrobes are about a small selection of pieces that all fit within one aesthetic - Tania Braukamper isn't such a person. With a wardrobe that spans three different rooms, her approach to fashion is a mixture of current-season key pieces mixed with vintage finds she's sourced on innumerous shopping trips around the world's more cultured capitals. Despite a disparate approach to shopping, Tania is adamant that the key to mixing vintage with new season is to stick to key looks and colours that work for oneself. And it's a theory that she works into her writing for, where she serves as the publication's Editor.
