In times of an economic downturn, the fashion world looks to ways to renew our desire for luxury. It may seem contradictory but in many ways it stands to reason that fur played such a prominent role on the Winter 2009/2010 runways; luxurious and glamorous, yet warm and practical, the resurgence of fur continues strongly as a fashion trend in 2010.

Fur in 2009/2010 has been used in a wide variety of ways - from furry Cossack hats to even a full fur dress at Viktor & Rolf. Fur coats and fur jackets are still the most common uses and great winter wardrobe staples.
Overall, in 2010 fur fits into three main styles:
The Chubby - which is a straight cut, short length, voluminous fur jacket, often sported by the likes of Kate Moss - is key. Throw one over a minidress for evening rock star glamour, or to luxe up a pair of jeans. Look to the Winter 2009/2010 runways of Jean Paul Gaultier, Isabel Marant, Yigal Azraol, and of course Kate Moss for Topshop for some inspiration.
Also falling under the rock chic banner are bohemian takes on the fur trend. The influence of Russian folk on bohemian luxury means Cossack elements make for strong bohemian fur looks.
Naturally this look should be luxurious and glamorous. Hermes' aviation-inspired coats are a perfect example; the wraps and stoles of Kenzo and Lanvin; and Valentino's classic fur-trimmed capes are also great takes on this look.
For something a little more out there, look to Karl Lagerfeld's fur covered helmets, and Sonia Rykeil's modern fur interpretations. The Avant Garde is all about using fur in non-classic ways; about pushing the envelope and daring to do something a little different.

Real of fake fur? Fur is of course something of a contentious issue, with groups like PETA campaigning constantly to stop the use of real fur. The choice is entirely yours; what we would say is that any of the on-trend styles in 2010 and beyond can work in either real fur or faux fur.
