I’m a big fan of hats, even though I barely get around to actually wearing them. There are tons of different options when it comes to hats, and we’ve seen everything from furry Cossack hats to turbans to berets on the runways in recent seasons. The music scene has also been influencing hat trends. What’s hot and what’s not right now?

What to wear?
Classic is best when it comes to hats right now. For both girls and guys the best styles to wear are (clockwise as shown below) the fedora, trilby, pork pie, derby / bowler, beret and panama. Chunky knit beanies have also been on the runways a lot of late – sure to keep you toasty in winter – or if you’re not into beanies and prefer something more classic, go for a knit beret instead.

What not to wear?
Steer clear of the bucket hat, cowboy, trucker cap and army cap. Enough said.

Hat styles
Confused about your hat types? A derby is another name for a bowler. You’ll know a fedora if it’s got a crease down the middle and is pinched in at both sides at the front. The pork pie hat is usually made from felt or sometimes straw, and is similar to a fedora only it has a flat round top; the trilby is also similar to the fedora, only has a more narrow brim.

Some people's wardrobes are about a small selection of pieces that all fit within one aesthetic - Tania Braukamper isn't such a person. With a wardrobe that spans three different rooms, her approach to fashion is a mixture of current-season key pieces mixed with vintage finds she's sourced on innumerous shopping trips around the world's more cultured capitals. Despite a disparate approach to shopping, Tania is adamant that the key to mixing vintage with new season is to stick to key looks and colours that work for oneself. And it's a theory that she works into her writing for Fashionising.com, where she serves as the publication's Editor.
