Stars: 2008 fashion trend

We already mentioned the star motif in our list of jewellery trends to buy in 2008. And, if you’ve had your eyes open, you’d have noticed that star shapes have been on everything from clothes to shoes to belts.

The star trend on the runway: Chanel and YSL S/S 2008

For their Spring / Summer 2008 collection, Chanel used star-spangled prints contrasted by American flag-style red and white stripes. Yves Saint Laurent’s collection was another one to use stars prolifically, adorning shoes, belts and necklaces with big, bold cut-out stars.

Stars give a feeling of childlike innocence and wonder; but can be made to look either cute or kitschy. In 2008 mix them with elements of sophistication to ensure they stay the former and don’t venture too far into the latter.

Some people's wardrobes are about a small selection of pieces that all fit within one aesthetic - Tania Braukamper isn't such a person. With a wardrobe that spans three different rooms, her approach to fashion is a mixture of current-season key pieces mixed with vintage finds she's sourced on innumerous shopping trips around the world's more cultured capitals. Despite a disparate approach to shopping, Tania is adamant that the key to mixing vintage with new season is to stick to key looks and colours that work for oneself. And it's a theory that she works into her writing for, where she serves as the publication's Editor.
