There are pieces of clothing in our wardrobe that are trans-seasonal and travel from a summer wardrobe into a winter one. This year w enot only see quite the opposite, but we see it as a trend where winter pieces are gliding into summer months.
We’ve already spoken of summer layering being a favourite for many designers and now cable knits are getting the limelight as a summer staple.
As worrisome as is the thought of wearing sweaters in sweltering heat, cable knits are offering a less-nanna and more-chic look. Borrow if from your great-grandmother or head to the shops; be sure to introduce your wardrobe to this classic piece.

Knits for summer 2012
L’Official Paris made a big editorial statement in their May 2012 issue by putting model Joanna Koltuniak on their cover in a see-my-side-boob cable knit. When the issue dropped we highlighted the trend to be a part of spring / summer 2012, especially with the cut and fitting seen in the cover image, and teased that a trend guide would follow. Here it is.
What is it about the cable knit that makes them classify as a trend for this new season? It could be their unconventional and non-accessible approach for the summer months, or the potential sex appeal they provide, as seen in the L’Official image.
Either way, cable knits have made several appearances in the spring / summer wardrobe despite being a winter essential. These cable knits aren’t the ones in which you’d want to get cosy and warm, but these will make you want to reveal more skin.
The trick here lies in the way cable knits are styled for this season – you want cable knits to be an accent to your outfit. A panel down the centre of the top or a horizontal border on the edge of a skirt, use cable knits minimally for spring 2012. Let them accessorise your sheer, mesh or perforated outfits.
Look for pieces that have wider and spread-out knits. They prove to be more airy than close cable knits, giving them the summer wardrobe appeal we’re chasing.
Who’s designing summer knits?
Keeping it traditional, Isabel Marant styled her cable knits with tailored shorts, hereby inclining them towards a summery look. The bright threads used to knit the asymmetric pattern is what makes this ensemble a darling of spring / summer 2012. To make it more wearable, look for pieces with knitted cotton thread instead of wool. For obvious reasons, you don’t want to wear wool in summer. Also, if you pick a full-sleeves knit, then go for one with loose, almost peasant-type cut. The looser the knit is, the more summer-friendly it is classed as.
However, if sleeveless cable knits prove to be a more wearable option for you, then Fendi and Bora Aksu are your point of reference. This variety of cable knits is probably more versatile than others, considering they can be layered in winter as well.
On the spring / summer runway, Fendi kept their colour palette clean and monochromed, while Bora Aksu played with a pop of colour with black sheer as the canvas. This look is brilliant for an addition in the summer wardrobe, especially if you’re aiming to conceal the not-so-demure sheer trend for spring.
