Creeping out of the shadows and into the light, Gothic fashion became widely revered at the alter of fashion last winter. And so, with the dark romance still continuing, there’s a closely entwined accessory trend that’s bubbled up to meet it. Crucifix and cross jewellery for fall 2013 fashion mostly take on the ornate and Gothic forms; but that’s not to say you can’t go minimal, either.

After the break, a look at the cross motifs on trend for 2013.

Ornate gold crosses.

These are found at the intersection of two of last year’s trends: romantic Gothic and baroque detailing. They speak of history and beautiful craftsmanship, religion and culture. Maltese Cross earrings at Alberta Ferretti offer a compliment to beautiful velvet and embroidered gowns. Dolce & Gabbana’s Byzantine crosses were oversized and statement-making, whether worn on necklaces, earrings, or belts.

Look for: crosses with filigree details, colourful cabochon jewels, and long, long beaded chains to wear the on.

Minimalist cross pendants.

On the same theme and yet the opposing end of the scale are clean, minimalist crosses that borrow more from the revival of 1990s grunge than from the alter of a Baroque cathedral. Much like those seen on the runway at Salvatore Ferragamo, these work perfectly in unfussy silver finishes – though block gold would work equally well.
