The themes in fashion this fall. Carwash pleats. Showing off your legs come fall becomes one with the definition of modern-chic thanks to the carwash pleats that made for such a sultry comeback on the fall runways. Laid against the bare skin, or layered against blocks of sheer, they’re the detail set to breath new life into your favourite skirt silhouettes: Carwash pleats at Salvatore Ferragamo, Tommy Hilfiger and Sally Lapointe, F/W ’15 Fur sleeves. It takes just one look at the fall 2015 runways to really grasp the supremacy of fur in a season that’s all about warmth and comfort. From shoes to bags and collars, fur has extended its influence all the way to the sleeves, where aside from beautiful, the furry details look pretty practical too: Fur sleeves at Marni, Celine and Michael Kors, F/W ’15 Neo Victorian. Ruffles, high-collars, precious fabrics and dramatic silhouettes point toward a serious step back in time taken by our favorite designers in search of inspiration. The 19th century translates beautifully even today, the Victorian influences making for the extraordinary way of reinventing your wardrobe come fall: Neo Victorian motifs at Altuzarra, Alberta Ferretti and Alexander McQueen, F/W ’15 The slip dress. A nod to the ’90s made to look and feel incredibly modern, the slip dress marks its return on the fashion radar come fall, spaghetti straps, lace trims and silky materials included. Expect them to steal your heart: Slip dresses at Celine, Salvatore Ferragamo and Prabal Gurung, F/W ’15 Chic patchwork. Even something as psychedelic as patchwork gets to undergo the ultimate chic transformation for autumn and winter 2015, when more is clearly more, as pointed out by the clashing prints, colours and fabrics: Chic patchwork at Etro, Valentino and Chloe, F/W ’15 Eastern influences. Sometimes inspiration comes from the most unexpected of places, colliding worlds, cultures, attitudes. Going East for fall, fashion borrows the best of the Chinese motifs and silhouettes, only to melt them and build them anew for the modern-woman to take delight in: Eastern influences at Diane von Furstenberg, Donna Karan and Valentino, F/W ’15 Floor-length coats. Trust a coat to turn into a bold statement the moment it’s nearly touching ground, its silhouette closely following along the lines of the body, its pockets, collars, sleeves reimagined, revamped and ready to transform a basic staple into a street-style wonder: Floor-length coats at Dries Van Noten, Maison Martin Margiela and Chloe, F/W ’15 Frosty pastels. If anything, pastels look even more charming in a season that’s all about cold, snow and slippery ice. Putting their frosty coat on, the palest of pinks, blues, and lavender hues are ready to play it all dainty and sweet, adding contrast to your favorite winter looks: Frosty pastels at Prada, Altuzarra and Tibi, F/W ’15 High-waist pants. With the waists rising higher and higher, the cinched pant silhouettes promise to elongate your legs and highlight your midriff in the most beautiful way possible, tucked in billowy blouses and cropped jackets adding to their effortless appeal this season: High-waist pants at Rodarte, Zimmermann and Wes Gordon, F/W ’15 Code red. Every season needs a few serious splashes of colour to be added to its signature palette, the brighter and richer the hues, the better. And in a season as stark as winter, red makes for a breathtaking contrast, so it’s a good thing the runways were basically swimming in a pool of red: Code red at Hermes, Delpozo and Dolce & Gabbana, F/W ’15 Pant suits. The androgynous tailoring keeps on adding new chapters to its unending tale, more pant suits gone slouchy taking over the runways for autumn and winter. Tiny polka-dots, whispers of scarlet red and cinched waists represent some of the ways in which the suits grew infinitely more feminine this season: Pant suits at Bottega Veneta, Christopher Kane & Chloe, F/W ’15 Luxe shimmers. Awash with some serious sparkle, the runways appeared ready to shine, quite literally, for fall 2015, shimmers and glitters adorning the most basic of silhouettes. Coats, twin-sets and evening gowns alike made it impossible to look away: Luxe shimmers at Giambattista Valli, Nina Ricci and Sonia Rykiel, F/W ’15 Winter brocades. Coming in all shapes, forms and sizes, the winter brocades were given a fresh new look for winter 2015, flirty, feminine dress silhouettes complementing their opulent feel: Winter brocades at Mary Katrantzou, Simone Rocha & Erdem, F/W ’15 Pure velvet. And speaking of rich and opulent, allow us to re-introduce velvet as the fabric to seek comfort in come fall and winter. Looking decidedly sophisticated in tones of cobalt, navy and black, velvet umps its game this season, its feel nothing short of extraordinary: Pure velvet at Emilio Pucci, Giorgio Armani and Sonia Rykiel, F/W ’15 New plaid. There’s something about plaid and autumn coming together that no one seems to be able to fight, instead what everyone appears to be doing is adding more fuel to the fire by reinventing the old, and reimaging the perennial pattern in countless new ways: New plaid at Alexander Wang, Vivienne Westwood Red Label and Fay, F/W ’15 More trend reports for fall 2015.
