Fall 2015 outerwear: key styles.

It’s safe to assume you’ll have a pretty hard time deciding which route to take this season for what concerns your choice of outerwear, simply because the runways were generous enough in offering plenty of alternatives, all cool, all relevant, all made to look modern and irresistible. Finding the perfect piece for you it’s just a matter of committing to your personal style and acknowledging what would best work within your existing wardrobe.

But as a new season also serves as excuse to embrace the new, know it’s perfectly alright to find yourself falling in love with a different kind of outerwear silhouette and in that, gracefully exiting your comfort zone.

However, fashion trends aside, if this is the season you decide to invest in a statement piece of outerwear, you should definitely be considering its practicality, its versatility, the way it will tie in with your existing wardrobe. You’ll need something to carry you through the cold seasons offering comfort on the side of good looks, something that will complement your aesthetic and will get you noticed on the streets:

The warm and practical.

In dressing for the cold weather, the one with the real harsh temperatures, a coat becomes more than the mere garment you throw over your shoulders for added effect, just to make your well-thought outfits appear effortlessly cool. By definition, a coat should protect and keep warm, it should feel cozy and easy to wear, it should be the thing you grab upon exiting the door knowing it will check all the boxes.

If you aim for warmth and comfort, go with a shearling lined coat that falls way below the waist and that leaves plenty of room for snug knitwear underneath. Wear it with wide-leg pants and soft turtlenecks, or with easy dresses and thigh-high boots. A shearling-lined bomber makes for another great option, one on the younger, cooler side, calling for high waist pants and skinny jeans.

If you’re more interested in the practical side of a coat, you won’t go wrong in choosing a classic camel number, or one of its more modern renditions, one that you can tie at the waist and sport as an outfit by itself. The great thing about a calf length coat is that it will cover pretty much everything and work with pretty much anything, from mini dresses and silky blouses, to boyfriend jeans and loose knits.

The classic and chic.

Perhaps you’ll have an easier time picking out a piece of outerwear based on the way it will complement your existing wardrobe.

If your closet brims with sleek pencil skirts and delicate blouses, if you are on the lookout for a coat to help you transition from morning into evening looking both office appropriate and street ready, opt for a classic wool piece in a neutral shade – think beige, gray or black. Go with classic tailoring, little to no embellishments, and high-quality fabrics.

If you love for your classic outerwear to also be seen as modern-chic, do invest in a luxe leather coat of maxi lengths, choosing dark, rich tones and super sleek tailoring. It will make for the perfect combo when paired to knitted dresses, two-piece suits, looking sophisticated enough to enhance even the most basic of your separates.

The statement outerwear.

Practical, warm, chic: but what if you want all of that on top of your coat being described as a statement piece? Totally possible. And what exactly turns a winter coat into a statement?

We’re thinking gorgeous tailoring, the kind that is at once classic, modern and qualitative, a rich, timeless hue (bordeaux, olive green, midnight blue), exaggerated lengths (think floor-sweeping), and of course some exquisite accents (gold buttons, oversized lapels, structured shoulders).

Also equaling a statement is a coat that’s envisioned to look as one-of-a-kind, bearing luxurious embroideries, fur detailing, beautiful quilting, perhaps some gorgeous prints or a mix-match of lush fabrics.

Complementary trends.

The moment you decide to buy a coat is the moment you know you have found the one able to complement your aesthetic, as well as to tie-in with your favorite fashion trends of the season:

The neo-bohemian.

We all love a little bit of boho in our lives, but if your wardrobe is mostly made out of romantic bohemian silhouettes than you will likely be needing a piece of outerwear able to mirror and enhance its free-spirited mood. In this regard, you can go with either voluminous, cozy blanket coats, in soft fabrics, bearing fringes, geometric prints or bits of  folk inspiration.

Or, you can opt for chunky fur and faux-fur jackets, gliding easily between dressy and casual with their cropped silhouettes, patchwork detailing and rich colour palettes. They will work with flowy dresses and maxi skirts, but also with folksy midi dresses and high boots.

The 1970s.

The 1970s trend is here to stay and whether you like it or not, there’s little you can do to escape its influence, seeing how the stores, the runways and the streets are overflowing with retro inspiration. In terms of complementary outerwear styles, there’s enough to choose from there as well, depending of course on which facet of the ’70s you’re most eager to explore.

A wrap coat is nothing if not effortless and it will look amazing with ’70s inspired flared pants and button-downs. This season seek it in light, soft neutrals, bearing exaggerated lapels, oversized buttons and contrasting belts.

To wear with snug turtlenecks, A-line mini-skirts and ankle booties, opt for a luxurious suede jacket in rich brown, fitted and long enough to cover a mini skirt, bearing simple lines and a subtle retro influence.

Luxurious sportswear.

The luxurious sportswear prevails for fall 2015, the style simplified and made to look rather subtle on the runways. To complement a sportier aesthetic, choose puffy parkas (or quilted jackets), slightly oversized, fur lined, in shades of khaki, as they are bound to look just as good with a pair of white sneakers, or a pair of dressier black heels.

Undoubtedly chic, the oversized coat maintains its relevance amongst the trending outerwear styles for fall 2015, embracing cleaner lines in drastically simplifying its appearance. Imagined in bolder shades, it makes for the perfect piece of outerwear to throw on top of your favorite athletic-inspired pieces: think sporty blousouns, leggings, fleece mini-dresses.

Cozy minimalism.

Minimalism acts as a statement all in itself, and so do the outerwear styles following its principles.

To complement a minimalistic aesthetic choose a luxurious coat of exaggerated proportions, one that can stand alone in building an outfit, needing little else than a pair of leather booties to fully function on the streets.

The same way, you can go with minimal silhouettes bearing menswear influences but bold, vibrant hues, their lines simplified to the max but working so beautifully with crop sweater tops and high-waisted tailored pants.

Outerwear for the evening.

There are plenty of fall and winter celebrations calling for something equal as special in the outerwear department. To round off your cold season wardrobe, seek out a cape coat for the chilly evenings. Slightly regal in attitude, but modern in feel, a cape makes for a gorgeous and imposing style able to instantly perfect your fall cover-up selection. This autumn go with refined embroideries and fur collars as defining accents.

If you’d like something more practical, why not opt for a luxurious jacket-coat hybrid? To make it fit for elegant evenings, seek it in classic black and white patterns, featuring a few statement accents to set it apart: a draped front, an interesting textile, luxurious frills.

Fall 2015 outerwear: key staples.

High-waisted pants are big this season so in wearing them right, make sure you own:

  • a boxy, boyfriend jacket to throw on top of a tucked-in knit and wear unbuttoned to subtly reveal the high-waist;
  • a cool, casual, cropped jacket, to meet the high-rise trousers at the waist and reinforce the cozy feel of a turtleneck.

  • if your style is rather laid-back, casual, built on sporty pieces, denim and easy knits, a (faux) jacket will most likely add that ultimate touch of luxury to your everyday outfits;
  • if your style is rebel-grunge, opt for a plaid jacket or coat for the season, in a relaxed silhouette and a versatile palette of colours;
  • a true necessity for the woman-on-the-go and a runway staple for fall 2015, a wool-mix woven coat in herringbone design is likely to complement all styles.
