Almost every spring 2012 fashion trend we’ve recorded so far is sitting on a cloud of nostalgia. The cloud has floated over several decades and picked up the chief trends from each era. It is now hovering over 2012 with a twist of modernity.

Metallic gold: the colour
The unforgiving and overwhelming allure of metallic gold is genuine, especially when you associate the colour with Madonna’s shimmering lingerie and Kylie Minogue’s shiny wardrobe. However, the loud roar of the Art Deco and ’20s period has dubbed over the colour’s involvement with the 80s and 90s time frame.
The metallic gold seen on the spring / summer 2012 runway is a romantic reminder of the luxury and rustic glow the colour entails. The colour adapts itself to the fabric it’s paired with; it’ll look liquid gold in some collections, while elsewhere, rural hues of warm gold or burnished gold take over. It’s a colour with a potential to be futuristic, whimsical and even careless at times, proving that metallic gold is not restraining itself to a rulebook for spring 2012. The colour will make you step out of your comfort zone, and by the end of it, you’ll be glad you did.
Flapper metallic gold
Marchesa is one label that not only takes over the award season in Hollywood with plunging necklines and shimmery gowns, but also manages to blend the evolving trends in their collections. For their spring 2012 collection, Marchesa stuck to its predictable colour palette of metallic colours, however, their flapper girl was way more modern and chic than expected. Julien McDonald also approached the trend with a flashy all-gold metallic fringed dress on the SS12 runway.

As a standalone colour, metallic gold is quite bold and strong. If you want to give this look a try, be sure to keep the entire outfit on the golden radar, including strappy gold sandals and subtle gold jewellery. Don’t try to mix too many colours in this look, as its authenticity lies in making the outfit all about gold.

Adapting metallic gold to your wardrobe is incredibly varied, giving you the option to pair this colour trend with other outfit-based trends of the season, such as, tailored shorts, 50s revival, flapper diva. Whether it’s a gold dress, shoes, earrings, bracelet or your hair accessory, metallic gold’s fluidity for spring 2012 is giving you the option to experiment with your wardrobe.
Apart from its bold singular appearance, we’ve spotted metallic gold partying with some other chief colours of the season.
Metallic gold and pastels
This is particularly a unique combination because you wouldn’t really corner out metallic gold to be teamed with serene and innocent colours. However, pastels are the talking point for spring 2012, which makes them conveniently slip into this striking colour trend. When mixing metallic gold with cotton candy colours, you have to cautious about the little details you put into your outfit. For example, don’t mix too many pastel shades together, as that will confuse your overall styling. Stick to one shade such as lilac or lime yellow and add a hint of metallic gold in the form of accessories or paneling. Wear a gold blazer over a 60s-style dress or a leather gold crop top with a pastel high-waisted skirt.
You don’t need the metallic gold to be of the shimmery or glittery kind; fluid silk or crisp organza will work best as the gold fabric of choice for this season.

Metallic gold and white
Channel Cleopatra this spring and introduce metallic gold to your minimalist wardrobe of cream and white. It’s crispy, luxurious and makes an apt outfit for a summer party on a yacht. Gucci’s spring / summer collection had serious gold teamed with a monochromatic palette, but you can stick to your whites and still make the trend work for you.
Think of adding a metallic statement collar, bold jewellery or gold shoes to your subdued whites.

Metallic gold and black
Similar to gold and white, this grouping walks straight down the path of styling success. Whether you add a gold belt to an all-black outfit or a shimmering gold jacket, you can’t go wrong with the marriage of black and metallic gold.
Azzaro gave an edge to their spring / summer collection by strategically placing metallic gold embellishments down their LBD. By bordering the bottom edge of a black maxi with metallic gold embroidery, Yves Saint Laurent subtly attacked the trend.

While on the other hand, Roberto Cavalli went for an extravagant exhibition of metallic gold in his collection. If his sequinned pants seem too loud for your personal liking, then think about wearing an animal printed top in gold hues with black pants.

The slightest hint of gold with a black ensemble instantly pokes the regality of your styling. This combination is especially bookmark-worthy if you’re picking a party look for the season.
If adding metallic gold to your outfit in the form of clothes seems too much of a fashion challenge, then let the trend sink into your accessories. A metallic golden watch is a boring old style statement, experiment with what you pick for your accessory closet. It only gets better from here.
Metallic gold shoes
Owning a pair of gold shoes is a staple for spring 2012 wardrobe. They can be sequinned, patterned, embellished or mixed with other chief colours. The bonus is that you can style them with any outfit – either with an overall golden outfit or spark up other spring trends with a hint of gold on your feet. Strappy stilettos, pumps or sequinned wedges, there are no rules for the kind of shoe you pick; just don’t wear boots in the summer heat.
If you have your eye on brogues for spring, wear them with tailored shorts or a sheer chiffon dress to channel a semi-androgynous look. A pair of cut-out brogues, like these at Topshop, would be a great addition to a minimalist wardrobe; team them with a black or white ensemble.
