Many men consider wearing prints to be a daunting – even risky – affair; but there is a type of print that anyone can easily pull off: stripes. Spring 2013 welcomes stripes for men and this time it’s in a bold and striking way.
Stripes are always around, after all, they’re a pattern that’s very straight forward and they make for an easy choice design-wise. In the fashion sense, stripes do a lot: they can help you look taller and can break the monotony of any look without being over the top. This season the stripe print is given new life in big and bold styles, and there are several ways you can wear it to transcend from classic to on-trend. Find out more after the break.
Men’s stripes for spring: ways to wear them
Stripes and color blocking
If you are not a big fan of print and would still rather be on the safe side then you can take inspiration from Michael Kors. A boldly striped top was paired with plain shorts and a color-block style jacket that’s in the same color as the stripes. This is a simple yet very stylish way to wear stripes come the warmer months.
Stripes and layering
Fans of layering are going to love the look from Marc by Marc Jacobs. A pair of vertically striped pants was paired with a double layer of lightweight shirts and then topped of with a jacket. Spicing up the ensemble are the printed beret and socks.
Note that you can layer bold stripes into any part of your outfit, whether it’s pants, a t-shirt or a striped jacket. If you feel bold you can layer the stripes over or under a different type of pattern or print.
Big Stripes and bright colors
J. Crew kept things youthful by pairing big bold striped tops with brightly colored shorts. This look is very becoming of spring and is perfect for daytime.
Multi-colored stripes as statement
Dolce and Gabbana men’s featured bright and multi-colored striped pieces which were simply paired with plain pieces. This prevents the print from becoming too overwhelming and keeps the look cool and casual. If you go the multi-coloured stripe option it’s a safe bet to make the striped piece your statement and keep the rest pared back.
A note on proportions: if you want to appear taller, go for vertical stripes.
Going for a slightly more formal look is Tommy Hilfiger. Striped shirts were simply worn under summer suits in the same colour, creating a monotonous yet still stylish preppy and nautical look.
Stripes on stripes
For those who are more adventurous when it comes to style, this look by Acne men’s is one for you to take inspiration from. There are many ways stripes on stripes can work and for this look, horizontal stripes were paired with vertical ones. This avoids the look being too coordinated.
Quirky mix of stripes
Taking it a little bit further with the stripe-on-stripe theme is Marni men’s. Mixing different colors of stripes in very relaxed pieces gives out a very fun and almost pajama feel to the look. It’s very casual and laid back, perfect for days when you want to be a little different.
Stripes can be considered as a basic print that everyone should have in their closets. Nevertheless, they can spruce up any ensemble, day or night. Don’t be afraid to experiment with stripes – wear them proudly and you’ll surely find ways to add that something extra to your outfit come spring.
