Fashion as art: Marga Weimans makes a dress from mobile phones

Blurring the line between runway and performance art was Marga Weimans’s spring / summer 2013 show at Amsterdam fashion week (AIFW). The materials, colours and shapes in the collection reflected her main inspiration – architecture. Weimans’ particularly unusual closing number – the showstopper of the set – was the “Vodaphone dress” made of 300 mobile phones. Dial in, and it changes colour.

Dennis Diem’s asphalt jungle

Dennis Diem showed his fall 2012 collection at Amsterdam Fashion Week, a collection titled The Asphalt Jungle after the 1950 film starring Marilyn Monroe. Diem has always been interested in film-noir and this turned out to be the inspiration for his latest collection.

Fitting with the theme, he used almost only black and white colors in his collection. Dennis Diem is known for handcraft and corsets, so it wasn’t that surprising that we also this time saw corsets and silhouettes with small waists and wide shoulders – such as the perfect hourglass measurements from Marilyn Monroe.

Said Mahrouf’s Avalanche

Said Mahrouf is a fashion designer hailing from Morocco. When he was nine years old, he and his family moved to Holland, and it was there that he studied fashion design. The collection he showed at 2012′s Amsterdam fashion week was made in his studio in Casablanca.

At the final show of the week Mahrouf presented his Haute Couture collection “Avalanche” which was inspired by the Avalanche rose and included a host of beautiful dresses.

Gestuz Autumn (Fall) / Winter 2012

The mission of the Gestuz brand is to offer a rich mix of crafted knitwear, high-quality leather pieces, sexy dresses and cutting edge denim. The designers latest collection was inspired by backstage rock n’ roll life but with a hint of elegance and sweetness. For this collection the two were especially inspired by the rough Danish coast weather and the pure landscapes that Denmark has to offer.

Bas Kosters: anti this, anti that

Bas Kosters is anti. He gives anti-parties, makes anti-fashion and gives anti-fashion shows. Hence the models weren’t tall, size 0, nor walking straight up on the catwalk. Instead the models were long, short, skinny and sizeable. The movement of the models was also more akin to dancing on the catwalk, as opposed to pounding down it. Hunkemoller: lingerie for the glamour girl

Established in 1886 by Wilhelm Hunkemoller, lingerie company Hunkemoller started out making corsets – yet, for fall 2011 there was not a corset to be seen. Showing at Amsterdam fashion week, Hunkemoller’s new lingerie collection was inspired by Hollywood stars from the ’30s and ’40s. It was a collection for the glamourous, chic and sexy woman.
